We had such a blast at our fall Wine and Wellness in September. 11 ladies designed an arrangement from local flowers and then learned about Essential Oils from Mary Bryant, of Melaleuca, The Wellness Company. Oils that were discussed were lavender, lemon and Peace which is a Tranquility Oil Blend that includes tangerine, orange, patchouli, tans, elemi and German chamomile blue.

Our flowers were almost all locally grown flowers from Barnswallow Farms.  They included sunflowers, celosia, roses, snapdragons, ageratum, globe amaranth and explosion grass.

Traci and Ana made our class a Mother-Daughter night out. Ana is such a talented designer and I love watching her creativity bloom. Her designs are very zen because she even uses her stems in her design. Plus she is so sweet, she made her arrangement for her teacher at school!

Teaching has always been a passion of mine. I always wanted to open my flower shop, but for those of you who don’t know, I taught floral design at high schools for 5 years before opening Beautiful Blooms by Jen. It was an honor to be asked to teach a floral design class to my friends from the Special Events Association of Northwest Ohio, SEANO yesterday.

“SEANO is a network of event professionals representing local businesses, attractions, educational institutions, non-profits, hotels and convention bureaus committed to event programming.”

The group had a social at The Cinnamon Stick where they were able to taste their croissants, quiche, pies and ice cream cocktails. After some networking we designed a floral design using all locally grown flowers from Barn Swallow Farms.

We hosted an Easter Centerpiece Class the Thursday before Easter because we had such a blast at our Christmas Class. This class was a smaller class, but the class participants commented how they enjoyed the smaller class more because there was more individual help.

Thank you to the Cinnamon Stick for hosting our class!

The centerpiece we made was in a white basket and included blue hydrangea, yellow lilies and bright colored carnations, mums and tulips. Plus we added some Easter eggs!

On Friday we had a private class for a group of new moms. They weren’t able to make it to our class on Thursday and asked if we could schedule a separate class. We love to host private events! The group brought in appetizers and wine since it was after hours and we had a blast!

I was so honored to be asked to teach the students at Whiteford Elementary about my profession as a florist on St. Patrick’s Day. I had around 20 students for three different sessions. Two groups were of the older students who were in 2nd to 5th grade, I believe. They learned to design a wrist corsage that they were able to wear home.

We started with the base of a green bow that we tied at the shop since bows are very complicated and not something I could teach in the 45 minute session.

Students were taught how to glue their flowers in, which is what the plastic piece is on their desk. It held the glue that they dipped their flowers into.

The younger students, Kindergaten-2nd grade made dirt pudding. I definitely chose an activity that was a little over their heads, but we still had a blast! Thank goodness for the two parent helpers and one teacher that helped. Since I have a two year old, it’s hard to know what older kids can handle!

The students helped mix up their pudding, smash their oreos and we made the different layers of soil. Then we added a worm on top!

It was really fun because the Kindergarten students were learning the parts of a flower and how flowers grow in class. So it was the perfect project!

I had so much fun and can’t wait to help again next year. Beautiful Blooms by Jen values education and Jen is the only Certified Florist in Northwest Ohio. If you’re interested in Jen teaching your organization, please call 419-517-8821.

Thanks to Cleveland Plant and Flower for donating the flowers we used to teach the older students!

At Beautiful Blooms by Jen, we value education and the future of the industry. With a degree in Agriculture Education, I believe in continuous education. Because of that reason, Colleen, Sarah and I drove up to Mayesh Wholesale Florist in mid-October to attend a Michigan Floral Association Regional Meeting.

It was an awesome opportunity to get up to Detroit and see what was new at Mayesh. Many of our orders are made over the phone or through email so it’s great to see what is new and interesting in person. The wholesale house supply department basically looks like a grocery store and the rows of shelves are all filled with floral supplies like vases, baskets, ribbon, paint, etc. It’s a florist’s heaven! Plus we love our saleslady, Nora!

Mayesh also has multiple coolers that are filled with fresh flowers. There is an entire section for each variety of flowers, the greenery and a whole cooler just for tropicals like orchids!

Mayesh also fed us dinner which was fabulous! We also had the opportunity to chat with our favorite Mayesh employees which is great because the more you know your salespeople, the better they know you and what you love!

The meeting began and it was great to learn what the Michigan Floral Association is up to. I love how hard they are working to make sure that the future of the floral industry is amazing!

Then there was a fabulous presentation by Jerome Raska, from Blumz by JR Designs, called Everything is Coming Up Roses. Jerome and his partner, Robin, have premier flower shops in Detroit, Ferndale, and Ann Arbor and we have watched both of them present before and always learn so much!

We talked about fabulous flower crowns which are so in right now.

This was one of my favorite pieces that is a bridal bouquet! The textures are so fun and the armature it’s made from with the woven lily grass is why!

Love this fun way to design a dozen roses!

Can you say wow?! Love the vase! Love the Dahlias! Love the roses!

We can’t wait to go back to the shop and think outside the box when designing with roses. Thanks again to Michigan Floral Association, Mayesh Wholesale Florist and Jerome Raska!

It was such an honor to be invited to teach a flower arranging class at the Fall Leadership Conference at Camp Libbey for the Girl Scouts of Northwest Ohio! This has been on my calendar for months and I have been looking forward to it the entire time!

Were you a girl scout? Did you ever go to a camp at Camp Libbey? I remember one summer going to a Paddle Saddle Camp at Camp Libbey with my childhood best friend. We learned to ride horses and canoe and stayed in platform tents. Such amazing memories!

The Girl Scouts who were invited to attend the Leadership Conference were in 6th-12th grade and my class was mostly from the Western half of Ohio, Eastern Indiana and Southeastern Michigan. These ladies had the opportunity to choose between multiple classes during my time slot and 16 chose to arrange flowers!

We first started talking about floral design and how to become a floral designer. Everyone then grabbed a container and we discussed floral foam, how to soak it, care and handling of flowers and taping the floral foam into the container. Then we began to green in with leather leaf, followed by pittosporum.
