Florist Friday- Meet Sarah!

Image

I first met Sarah when she was a freshman at Southview High School and she was one of my horticulture students! She was one of the most talented floral designers I taught and I was so excited when she decided to apply to Ohio State ATI and major in Floral Design and Marketing! She earned an awesome scholarship because of all the hard work she put in during high school and the competitions she had competed in.

Check out this blast from the past of some of my favorite students competing at Nationals!

During college, Sarah worked at Creque’s Greenhouse during the summer and interned at a flower shop in Wooster, OH during college. We were so lucky that we were just expanding as she needed a full time job! She was the perfect fit since she’d begun her training with me!

As one of the youngest in the shop, Sarah took charge with our kid’s classes and did a great job!

As the shop grew and we are now too busy for kid’s classes every weekend, she has now moved into one of our lead designers! She works full time at Beautiful Blooms by Jen and she has become such an creative designer and wonderful saleswoman!  She has recently begun working with families in planning their sympathy flowers and is doing a great job!

Sarah says one of her favorite things about working at a flower shop is seeing someone’s reaction to her work. Especially at weddings when the bride is so relieved and smiling when she sees everything is perfect.

Sarah also says one of her favorite things to do at the shop is corsages.

Another fun fact is that her dad is our delivery driver when we need him. He’s also the athletic trainer at Southview High School so it’s so awesome that he helps us out!

And she loves when she has artistic freedom with a design. Her recommendation for Valentine’s Day is choosing Designer’s Choice so she can design you something creative!

It’s been so fun watching Sarah grow up and we’re so fortunate to have such an amazing designer and person working at Beautiful Blooms by Jen! Look what a beautiful young lady she has become!

Colleen Barnhart, Manager at Beautiful Blooms by Jen

Colleen Barnhart, Manager at Beautiful Blooms by Jen.  JP Photography

I first met Colleen when she was the Manager at Bumble, a former flower shop in downtown Sylvania. I had been invited to open Beautiful Blooms by Jen inside and while working on contracts, I found our little house and opened our own location. Colleen had just had a baby and that is now how we keep track of how long we’ve been open in Sylvania. Madeline is now 6 years old!

Colleen didn’t come work for me right away though…  I was actually devastated when my first manager, Meghan, was moving to be closer to her boyfriend, now husband. I had no idea what I was going to do because business was booming and I needed to hire staff anyway, and then I received an email from Colleen. It was totally fate and I am so glad that we are now a team! She is a fabulous manager and now one of my best friends!

Colleen began her work in the floral industry working for her cousin, Annette Moriarty, back in high school. The shop was called A Studio. Then she moved on to Glendale Flowers where it seems every floral designer in Toledo got their start. Back in the day it was the place to be!

Colleen then moved on to Twigs Florals and Gifts in Rossford and worked there for many years. She was presented with an opportunity to help open Bumble and she was excited to be working in Sylvania close to home. A new marriage and a new child later, she stayed at home for a while and when she was ready to come back to work, she found her new home at Beautiful Blooms by Jen!

Her family home includes her hard working husband, Tim, Tim’s three kids, and 6 year old, Madeline. Her older kids, you have probably seen helping out and delivering for Beautiful Blooms by Jen. Megan and her truck-driving, arch delivering husband, Brandon and Caitlan. I love that they are all part of the team and the dream!

I honestly don’t know what I would do without Colleen. She is the Manager of Beautiful Blooms by Jen and takes care of the every day ordering for the shop. She also helps manage the day to day orders and deliveries which allows me to focus on weddings and the business like marketing and accounting. Colleen is an amazing at everything she does and I am so lucky to have her as part of our BBBJ Team!

All Make-Up by Beauty by Brandi

Beautiful Blooms by Jen was so crazy busy in 2016 we never even took new head shots or pictures for our website. Since we didn’t, we didn’t even send out holiday cards last year or this year!  So when we decided that we were due, I wanted to turn it into a super fun day!

We are so excited for our friend Julie, from JP Photography, and Brandi, from Beauty by Brandi, who opened a studio together a few months ago. We decided to choose them to pamper us while we hung out in their studio with snacks and drinks! It was so awesome to be able to get everything done in the same place while we relaxed.

One by one, we arrived and began to get beautiful because of Brandi!

We brought all kinds of snacks and outfits so that we could make sure we coordinated. Don’t worry, the girls under 21 weren’t drinking wine too. PS if you haven’t tried Apple Pie Wine from Fresh Thyme Market, you need to!

Once everyone was dressed and had their make up on, we each had our head shots taken. Then we did some group shots inside and then braved the cold weather for some group shots and quick head shot outside. We can’t wait to see how they turned out.

Since we were all pretty and it was only 5pm when we finished up with pictures, we went out to dinner at Sakura. We had decided to make this our Christmas party since we were so busy in December and we didn’t want to just head home when we were all done up! The girls had a gift exchange. The girls had surprised me with a hair cut and color when I went to get my hair done in December which was so amazing. I surprised them by inviting them all to a floral conference in March so we could all go away for the weekend and have a fun time while learning.

It was super dark at Sakura, so that’s the only picture we took! But it was delicious and we had a great time. Could not believe how crazy busy it was in there. We were very thankful to be able to grab a table instead of waiting for a hibachi table.

Then we decided to head to The Cinnamon Stick, which is a new bakery on Holland Sylvania Rd. Cooper and Kyle met us over there because who doesn’t love dessert?! Cooper was so excited to try a brownie sundae!  They also have amazing pies and shakes with alcohol!

Testimonial:

“I love receiving flowers from Beautiful Blooms by Jen every other week! It’s so much fun to see the design each time and how different they all are!” – Becky Carr

I loved Ashley right from the beginning! Our love of bling was what made us click and I was so excited for her wedding! As I began to load everything up to drive to Schedel Gardens in Elmore, OH, I noticed a big giant  storm following me! I called over to Schedel Gardens to figure out the backup plan. They said the storm is going to pass and the wedding will go on outside, after the storm.

I arrived at the gardens and finished unloading everything just in time for it to start pouring! Of course, that was about the time the bride and her bridal party showed up. The ladies at Schedel were totally prepared and zipped the girls down to the cottage to get ready. Then after the rain stopped they had a huge crew ready to dry off chairs and they actually moved all of the chairs to a higher location since the one planned was a mess. I hope the guests were prepared for an outdoor wedding. I couldn’t believe how cool and collected Ashley and Josh were!

Beautiful Blooms by Jen was one of 262 Petal It Forward Events in 235 Cities in all 50 States!

Isn’t that so cool?! We had such a blast!

On October 19, 2016, the Society of American Florists and florists nationwide randomly surprised people on the street with flowers in more than 235 cities in 50 states. Lucky recipients received two bouquets — one to keep, and one to share with a friend, family member, co-worker, or even a complete stranger. There were a lot of smiles going around as the country experienced flower power.- SAFnow.org

In the morning, Colleen and her daughter Madeline passed out flowers at Brieschke’s Bakery on Main Street in downtown Sylvania. Jen and her son Cooper passed out flowers at Chandler Cafe, on Main Street. While Colleen dropped off Madeline at school, they passed out more at Maplewood Elementary and totally surprised moms.

Cooper’s favorite thing to do at the flower shop is smell the flowers. Tons of hot pink roses were ready to go when we got in at 7:45am!

At lunch, Sarah and Jen petaled it forward at Lourdes University. Students and faculty were so surprised and excited to accept the two flowers and petal it forward to other faculty and staff.

The reason Beautiful Blooms by Jen decided to take part in this awesome event is because we wanted to brighten people’s day and show them the positive emotional benefits of flowers.

THE FOLLOWING ARE HIGHLIGHTS FROM SAF’S SURVEY OF OVER 2,500 AMERICANS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES:

  • WHEN IT COMES TO HAPPINESS, IT’S JUST AS GOOD TO GIVE FLOWERS AS IT IS TO RECEIVE: 88 PERCENT OF AMERICANS REPORT THAT GIVING FLOWERS MAKES THEM FEEL HAPPY, WHILE 80 PERCENT REPORTED THAT RECEIVING FLOWERS MAKES THEM FEEL HAPPY.
  • JUST BEING AROUND FLOWERS IMPROVES YOUR MOOD: 76 PERCENT OF AMERICANS AGREE THAT HAVING FLOWERS IN THEIR HOME OR OFFICE IMPROVES THEIR MOOD.

We were so excited when Channel 13 ABC came out to interview Jen and talk about Beautiful Blooms by Jen Petaling it Forward. Plus Jen made This is Home for the week! So cool! Thanks 13 ABC!

Lots of customers have been asking about our Central location lately. We are now back to just one location, our downtown Sylvania location, 5646 Summit Street, and I am so excited! I realize that closing that location may seem like a crazy business decision, or even opening it to begin with, but these are not decisions we took lightly. I apologize to those of you who this has inconvenienced, but we have to make decisions on what is best for the company.

This adventure started out when we realized that after 3 years in our current location that we were growing so fast and we needed more work space. Since we couldn’t find somewhere to move our entire location to, after searching for over a year, we were excited when we found the Central Avenue location with a 1 year lease. We were so excited that we found not only a work space, but a location with high traffic and visibility. We decided to have a grand opening since we had never had one at our Downtown Sylvania store and have it open the same hours as our Sylvania store. We decorated it beautifully and used it to design weddings all summer long and staffed it full time.

By the time wedding season was winding down in October, I had learned that I do not like having two locations. I’m a control freak and need to make sure everything is perfect for my customers. (That’s one of the reasons you love us though right? ) Plus it wasn’t very busy with walk in customers. As we grew busier for the holidays I realized that we either needed to hire staff in order to maintain our high level of customer service, or we needed to use the Central Avenue location just as a work space when it was needed. We decided on the second option.

Although this alleviated our space issues, we had to make a decision when our lease came up at the end of March. After careful thought, we decided to go back to one location. We believe that the money we were investing in the Central Avenue location was too much for a spot that was simply used as work space and there were other renters interested.

So that is the story! I have an awesome team and we are so excited to begin our tenth wedding season and continue doing the amazing designs we do every day for our customers! We’ll figure out our next plan when the time is right and hopefully then we can learn from this and everything will be perfect.
