Valentine’s Day Cut Flower Advice- Flower Shop vs. Grocery Store

We were so excited to find out we were invited to be on 13abc’s Full Plate with Rebecca Regnier!

My whole inspiration for the show was to discuss the difference between buying flowers at a florist instead of at a grocery store. I knew there was a difference, but do consumers?

We needed three bouquets for our experiment. The first thing I was disappointed to find was that it was 2/2 when we were shopping and this bouquet was still on the shelf and says Display until 2/1.  And it was 9pm on 2/2 when we were shopping… Not good.

Then we found dead gerber daisies! Why are these still on the shelf? YUCK!

After our disgusting adventure we were able to find 3 bouquets that matched. I was horrified to find that even though it was 10 degrees outside, we were checked out and no one offered to wrap our flowers. Then when I asked about something to wrap them in they said we could go back to the floral department for plastic.

Kyle was not happy either : )

The plastic only covered the stems and still left the top uncovered- See bouquet on the right.  Flower are supposed to be stored between 36-38 degrees and freeze below 32. At Beautiful Blooms by Jen, we would be double wrapping everything to ensure the flowers are protected!

The worst part was when we started to prepare for the show the day before we realized there were aphids all over the flowers! This is a bug that eats flowers and greenery and if a consumer brings this into their house, they will infest other plants! GROSS!

Of course the show taped on the day of a level 3 snow emergency! Luckily my husband Kyle’s school cancelled so I had a driver! The show must go on!
